Canada’s men’s volleyball team has clinched a berth in the final of the NORCECA Continental Championship following an exhilarating 3-2 victory (18-25, 25-21, 25-17, 24-26, 15-13) against Cuba in Charleston, West Virginia, on Saturday night.
The Canadian squad advanced to the semifinals with authority, securing comfortable victories over Mexico and the Dominican Republic in the group stage. They showcased remarkable resilience by triumphing over Cuba in the knockout stage, paving the way for their appearance in the championship match.
The final showdown is scheduled for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. Canada is set to face off against the United States in pursuit of the gold medal, while Cuba and the Dominican Republic will vie for the bronze at 5:00 p.m.
The U.S. team demonstrated their strength earlier in the day, achieving a straight-set victory over the Dominican Republic. They enter the final with a similar track record to Canada, having only surrendered one set to Cuba. The United States asserted their dominance throughout the tournament, with three convincing group stage wins against Suriname, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, in addition to their semifinal triumph.
Canada led in both attack and aces, amassing 66 successful attacks and nine aces, resulting in a total of 107 points in their longest match of the tournament. Despite a shaky start, the team found their rhythm as the game progressed, with Stephen Maar, a native of Aurora, Ontario, leading the charge with an impressive 28 points, including 25 successful attacks, two blocks, and an ace. Toronto’s Arthur Szwarc made a significant contribution with 22 points, consisting of 18 successful attacks and three aces.
On the Cuban side, three of the top five scorers included Jesus Herrera with 18 points, Marlon Yant with 16, and Miguel Lopez with 14. However, Cuba’s performance was marred by 13 faults, proving to be costly.
This victory marks a significant accomplishment for the Canadian men’s team, following in the footsteps of their national women’s team, who secured the bronze medal at the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship in Quebec City the previous Sunday. With an opportunity to claim their championship title on Sunday, anticipation is running high among fans. Live coverage of the match will be accessible on the Volleyball Source YouTube channel.
